On 19 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the outgoing Ambassador of Vietnam to Lithuania Pham Kien Thiet. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister thanked the Vietnamese Ambassador for his efforts to strengthen the relationship between the countries and stressed that the bilateral ties were intensifying.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania has received an answer from the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano to the letter of Lithuania’s Foreign Minister and the Minister of Energy of 3 January 2017. In the letter, Lithuania expressed its concerns over the recurring incidents at the Astravets nuclear power plant (NPP). Once again, the country set out its requirements to Belarus: to invite a Site and External Events Design (SEED) mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for a full-scale assessment review of the site and design safety, risk and resilience, as well as to carry out stress tests at the Astravets NPP. Lithuania also requested Belarus to ensure international monitoring of the Astravets NPP.

On 17 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the new South Korean Ambassador Choi Sung-joo, who resides in Warsaw. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister welcomed the excellent bilateral relationship, growing trade volumes and reminded Lithuania’s goal of adjusting the issue related to export certificates for agricultural products in the short run.

On 18 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Ambassador of Iran to Lithuania Ramin Mehmanparast, who resides in Warsaw. Linkevičius expressed gladness that Lithuania and Iran signed the intergovernmental agreement on economic cooperation, when Lithuania’s Foreign Minister was paying a visit to Iran on 29 May 2016. The agreement entered into force on 4 January of this year.

On January 16, by invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius, meeting of the ministers of foreign affairs of the UK, Estonia, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland and Sweden was held in Brussels, with the security issues in the Northern and Baltic region on the agenda.

Lithuania and Poland are the closest neighbours and strategic partners that have many interests and challenges in common, therefore, there is no alternative to close cooperation between these countries, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius in a meeting with the Secretary of State at the Polish President’s Chancellery Krzysztof Szczerski.

On 4 January in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the authors and publishers of a historical book about the House of Wiśniowiecki of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which was selected as the best book of 2016 in Ukraine. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister noted that the preservation and promotion of a common historical memory in the region were important for Lithuania.
