L. Linkevičius: Lithuania is ready to continue to support Moldova's European path
The meetings with Moldova's Prime Minister Maia Sandu, Interior Minister Andrei Năstase, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicolae Popescu focused on the implementation of European reforms in Moldova. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister expressed hope that the current Government would remain committed to achieving European integration during its term in office, carry out reforms that bring tangible benefits to citizens, and regain the trust in state institutions among citizens.
“We hope that the new Government will be able to make substantial progress in meeting the country's Association Agreement commitments. Lithuania is ready to continue to support Moldova's European path and to share its integration experiences,” said L. Linkevičius.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also believes that the Government of Moldova will soon reach an agreement with the EU on the re-establishment of the European Union High-Level Advisers Mission.
The Minister L. Linkevičius and the President of Moldova Igor Dodon exchanged views on the strengthening of bilateral relations. They discussed Lithuania's expert and development cooperation support, Moldova's European aspirations, as well as regional security challenges.
"It is very important for Moldova to keep the path of European integration and to seek a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict based on the principles of Moldova's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and by granting a special status to Transnistria," said the Foreign Minister.
L. Linkevičius also met with the Vice Speaker of the Parliament of Moldova Monica Babuk from the Democratic Party that has transitioned to opposition. The Foreign Minister welcomed a peaceful transfer of power on 14 June.
“A constructive and responsible opposition is important for the consolidation of democracy. I hope that you will consistently support the development of a pro-European country,” said the Lithuanian Foreign Minister.
The Foreign Minister ensured that Lithuania was ready to continue providing expert assistance to Moldova in the fields of anti-corruption, money laundering prevention, training for police employees, law reform, and other areas.
